Institute of Cristallography - Istituto di Cristallografia (IC)

Italy

The National Research Council's (CNR) Institute of Crystallography is a renowned scientific institute responsible for research on structural chemistry, structural biology and material science.

At IC scientists are involved in a large number of activities, such as developing innovative crystallographic methods, applicable to inorganic and biological materials; realizing bio-sensors based on photosynthetic proteins, necessary to various ambient, alimentary and medical applications; and developing software of international interest.

The institute's Trieste section, which has been located in Area Science Park since 1993, concentrates on the development and operation of the diffraction of ELETTRA's XERD1 beamline and its subsequent use for crystallographic studies of proteins and materials.

National Laboratory for Advanced Technology and NanoSCience (TASC)

Italy

Located in the Area Science Park of Trieste, (INFM) Laboratory for Advanced Technology and NanoScience (TASC) represents INFM (the National Institute for the Physics of Matter)’s first national laboratory.

Counting on a scientific staff of 50, TASC acts as a service-oriented national resource for academia and industry, providing new materials (semiconductors, oxides and carbon-based films) for nanofabrication (nanostructures for electronics, photonics, and space and biomedical applications) and access to a wide set of characterization techniques.

Among its most important activities, TASC is responsible for operating six beamlines at the ELETTRA synchrotron radiation facility for both in-house and external research.

United World College of the Adriatic (UWC Adriatic) - Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico

Italy

UWC Adriatic is an international residential school located in Duino (a village between the cities of Monfalcone and Trieste), which brings together 190 students from around the world for the final two years of their high school education. Inspired by the ideas of the German educationalist Kurt Hahn, the UWC organization aspires to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

With such initiative, UWC aims to help students become active, involved and educated citizens whose attitudes towards understanding and community service will be a powerful catalyst for change. Through the students, as representatives of their countries, UWC hopes to influence their wider communities to become more compassionate and peaceful, in order to foster, eventually, international understanding and peace.

Astronomical Observatory of Trieste - Osservatorio Astronomico (OAT)

Italy

The Astronomical Observatory of Trieste (OAT) is one of the Italian centres of excellence for the study of astronomy.

The research conducted at the institute covers several specific fields, ranging from the study of the sun, solar system, stars and Milky Way to the study of distant galaxies and cosmology.

OAT is also involved in the European Space Agency's (ESA) Planck space mission and it works closely with a host of other institutions, including the Galileo National Telescope in the Canary Islands and the astronomical facilities of the European Southern Observatory in Chile.

National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics - Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS)

Italy

The National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) is an internationally oriented public research institution responsible for promoting, coordinating and conducting study and scientific research aimed at evaluating and preventing geological, environmental and climatic risks, as well as widening, at the same time, the knowledge of the earth and its resources, especially in the fields of oceanography (under the Physical, Chemical and Biological aspects), geophysics and marine geology, and experimental and explorative geophysics.

To conduct such research, OGS can count on several strategic infrastructures of excellence, such as its own vessel, the OGS Explora, an oceanographic research ship.

Moreover, not only does OGS contribute to the spreading of knowledge in the field of Earth Sciences, but it also helps developing practical solutions to environmental, economical and social issues in line with the National Program of Research (PNR) and strategic objectives set by the EU, with particular referral to Horizon 2020.

Science Centre Immaginario Scientifico (IS)

Italy

The Science Centre Immaginario Scientifico (IS) of Trieste is an interactive and multimedia science museum that, together with those located in Pordenone, Malnisio and Tavagnacco, constitutes the interactive science museums network of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Each museum of the network has its own distinctive features, but they all share the same philosophy and methodology: touching, experimenting, learning while having fun in order to truly understand science and nature.

The Science Centre (IS) of Trieste develops informal interactive educational activities, hands-on exhibitions and multimedia presentations for the public, particularly for school-age children.

The exhibitions, both informative and entertaining, are prepared in collaboration with the scientific institutions based in Trieste and other international scientific organizations from around the world.

Cluster in Biomedicine - Consorzio per il Centro di Biomedicina Molecolare (CBM)

Italy

CBM is a public-private company founded with the ambitious mission of acting as a bridge between public research and industry in an extremely important sector, that of “personalised medicine”.

Since 2004 CBM has been coordinating the Technology Cluster in Biomedicine of Friuli Venezia Giulia, a network of science centres, companies, governmental bodies, development agencies and financial partners established in order to create synergies between research, training and technology transfer, and to stimulate and accelerate the process that transforms a “scientific idea” into a “product”, to the benefit of citizens and society, as well as to the social and economic development of the territory.

National Institute of Nuclear Physics - Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN)

Italy

The Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) is an organization dedicated to the study of the fundamental constituents of matter, which promotes, coordinates and funds theoretical and experimental research in the fields of sub-nuclear, nuclear and astroparticle physics.

Fundamental research in these areas requires the use of cutting-edge technologies and instrumentation developed by INFN in both its own laboratories and in collaboration with the world of industry.

Moreover, INFN promotes the application of the skills, methods, and experimental techniques developed in the course of its own research to conduct scientific inquiry in other fields, such as medicine, artistic preservation, and environmental protection.
