Despite the good efficacy profile of ACT in malaria treatment in Nigeria, some studies have shown delay in parasite clearance time in following treatment of P. falciparum malaria with ACTs. Artemisinin resistance associated mutations in K13 gene, though originated from western Cambodia, have spread to neighboring countries and beyond, including Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, China and India. It then becomes imperative that the presence of genetic marker like mutations in K13 genein P. falciparum is assessed in Nigeria. Presently, there is no documented study on the prevalence of mutations in P. falciparumK13 gene in any Nigerian population. The grant was awarded to me to enable me research on the title: Molecular Surveillance of Plasmodium falciparum Kelch 13 (K13) gene in Nigeria: thirteen years after the introduction of artemisinin-combination therapy
