Statement of purpose: tuberculosis remains a major global public health concern despite years of prevention and treatment. South Africa is one of the countries with the heaviest burden of TB, which is exacerbated by HIV infection rates, the single most important factor in the increased incidence of TB in the last decade. My study aims to provide information on the genotypic characateristics and epidemiology of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDR-TB) strains in the Johannesburg area, using molecular techniques in association with clinical data. The data from the study will be compared with national and global data available for drug resistant and MDR-TB and provide an understanding of the global distribution of the drug resistant TB strains.
