During my PhD project, I am studying the role of oxytocin in fear and anxiety in a specific brain region known as bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST). This region is involved in processing anxiety and is highly connected with the central amygdala, a region involved in fear. By modulating the amygdala, the BNST might control fear and anxiety-like behaviors. Oxytocin, through oxytocin receptors located in the BNST was shown to reduce anxiety and increase fear.
