OWSD Pakistan: Virtual Lecture Series on "Challenges for Young Women Embarking Career in Science"

“We have to be very vigilant that young female scientists have the same opportunities as their male colleagues”- Fabiola Gianotti (Experimental Physicist, First Women Director General, CERN). Also, as Eric Lander (Mathematician, Geneticist, Science Advisor to US President) said that its “Time for the future, we will see the young scientist in future writing”

Keeping this in mind, OWSD Pakistan took an initiative to share the journeys of young female researchers in the Virtual Lecture Series "Challenges for Young Women Embarking Career in Science". Their life journeys are inspirational and motivational which shows how wonderfully these young scientists have overcome the hurdles and setbacks of the modern world. Also, how they adapt to changing dynamics of these times.

The first speaker of the session was Dr Faria Fatima. She did her PhD from Dr. A. Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (KIBGE) University of Karachi, and currently, she is serving as Assistant Professor at the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Life Sciences, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST). Dr Fatima is also a full member of OWSD. The title of her presentation was "A Journey: Becoming a Reflexive Researcher”. Dr Faria Fatima shared her journey, hurdles she faced during research and publication process and talked about how to overcome those hurdles.

The second speaker of the session was Dr. Shagufta Sahar. She did her PhD from Dr. A. Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (KIBGE) University of Karachi, and currently, she is serving as Assistant Professor at Department of Agriculture and Agribusiness Management, University of Karachi. The title of her presentation was "Food Security: The Challenge of Feeding 09 billion People”. Dr. Sahar discussed the issues and current situation of food security in Pakistan. She explained different components of food security as availability of food, access to food, utilization of food, stability, and Malnutrition. She motivated the audience to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

The program was conducted virtually on Microsoft Teams. The guests were introduced by the Media Representative of OWSD Pakistan, Ms.Syeda Areesha Zaidi At the end of each session, an interactive Q&A session was conducted. The Session was by Dr Sitwat Zehra (Treasurer, OWSD Pakistan & Associate Professor, KIBGE) She extended her gratitude towards the speaker, organizing team and media coordinators of OWSD PNC and delivered the special message from Prof. Dr. Bina S. Siddique (President, OWSD Pakistan)
