OWSD to participate in UNESCO's celebration of International Day of Women and Girls in Science in Naples, Italy

February 09, 2024

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) is proud to announce its participation in the upcoming International Conference organized by the UNESCO Chair on Health Education and Sustainable Development of Federico II University and the Network of the Italian UNESCO Chairs (ReCUI) to celebrate the World Day of Girls and Women in Science. The event will take place on February 11, 2024, in Naples, Italy, at the Hall Magna Federico II.

The conference aims to showcase the most significant programs initiated by UNESCO to support girls and women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). As part of this initiative, the Italian national television (RAI) will provide access to archival footage from Teche RAI, featuring exemplary stories of women's contributions to STEM fields. These stories will serve as inspiring models for the students attending the conference, encouraging them to pursue careers in STEM.

OWSD Coordinator, Tonya Blowers, has been invited to present OWSD's programs and initiatives as one of the emblematic UNESCO programs supporting women and girls in science. Her participation underscores OWSD's commitment to promoting gender equality in STEM fields globally.

The conference, held under the high patronage of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, aims to raise awareness and stimulate interest in STEM subjects among girls and women, bridging the existing gender gap in education and careers. It will also highlight the significant efforts undertaken by UNESCO and the Italian UNESCO Chairs, in collaboration with partner institutions, to advance women's participation in STEM.

OWSD is honored to be a part of this prestigious event and looks forward to contributing to the collective effort to empower girls and women in science worldwide.
