My doctorate degree project investigated ecological and genetic factors that contribute to variation in vector competence in mosquito populations. It involved the detection of the presence of bacteria endosymbionts in field-caught mosquitoes using 454-pyrosequencing, using lab strains of Aedes aegypti to investigate up-regulation of immune genes after microinjection, and improving the linkage map of Aedes aegypti for mapping the resistance gene against filarial infection in Aedes aegypti using RAD-tag sequencing.
