
About me
Karla Paz Cordón holds a PhD from the International Doctoral Program in Agriculture and Environment for Development at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. She earned a Master’s degree in Animal Science and is a veterinary epidemiologist from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science at USAC. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Aquaculture from the Center for Marine Studies and Aquaculture at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala.
She has completed several postgraduate courses on marine plankton and aquatic toxins. With the support of the IAEA, she participated in “The IOC Training Course and Certification on Identification of Harmful Marine Algae”, hosted by the Government of Denmark through the IOC Science and Communication Centre on Harmful Algae at the University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.
Dr. Paz has been a university lecturer for more than 15 years at the Center for Marine Studies and Aquaculture, University of San Carlos of Guatemala, where she teaches courses in Aquatic Zoology, General Biology, Aquatic Ecology, and Aquatic Botany.
She currently serves as coordinator of the marine stressor “Harmful Algal Blooms and Marine Toxins” within REMARCO (Research Network on Marine-Coastal Stressors in Latin America and the Caribbean). She is also the official representative of Guatemala to the IOC Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions of UNESCO.
In addition, she is an active member of the International Society for the Study of Harmful Algae (ISSHA) and of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).
