Cytological and molecular approaches were used to asess the quantum and range of genetic variation among the Indian species of Cucumis. Karyomorphological and meiotic chromosomal studies revealed the occurrence of two somatic chromosome numbers 2n=14,24. Meiotic chromosome analysis of intra specific hybrids of species belonging to each group have been analyzed to understand the genetic make up. C. sativus group has high genome homology and less varability while melo group has irregularities in chromosome pairing, high degre of genetic variation and lesser genomic stability. RAPD primer pair array, ISSR, ISJ, DAMD and nuclear rDNA have been studied to substantiate the data.
