In my doctoral research entitled “Biosynthesis of Polyhydroxyalkanoates and its Medical Applications” I carried out investigations on the biosynthesis of natural renewable polymer called polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from bacteria. I was able to biosynthesize an absolute homopolymer of poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate) P(3HO), a type of PHA for the very first time. The polymer was then developed as potential cardiac patch scaffold for engineering cardiac tissues and as a novel composite scaffold incorporating nanobioglass particles 45S5® for skin tissue regeneration.
