Among the Rukuba tribe in Bassa local government area of Plateau State in Nigeria, the use of castor seed for contraception ancient and widespread (Okwuasaba et al., 1991 1997, Osunkwo et al., 1988). In 1990, this property of castor seeds was thrown into limelight when a female traditional doctor (Hazija), communicated that 2-3 seeds protect the female from conception for a whole year (Okwuasaba et al., 1995; Kabele-Toge and Igwilo, 1997). This information has led to an enormous amount of research work on the seed between 1990 till date. Prior to this, most work done on castor seed has been from the aspect of toxicity. More interestingly, some other researchers have reported on the antifertility property of the seed, (Garg 1970, Dolfallah and Al-Mutairy, 1994; Al-Tahan, 1994.) Furthermore, 10 women volunteers, oral administration of 3 seeds prevented contraception for 12 months with no sign of toxicity (Okwuasaba et al., 1995). Expected signs of toxicity include; nausea and vomiting, weight gain and raised blood pressure as is found with conventional contraceptives which means the seed extract has both hormonal properties and a direct effect on the female reproductive system. Thus the aim of the study was to ascertain the effect of the extract of the minor seed variety of ricinus communis on femaile fertility and evaluate its embryotoxic effect.
