Dr. Ugochi A. Okengwu is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Her research focuses on Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, and Data Analysis, with applications in climate change, agriculture, and health. She is a University of Michigan African Presidential Scholar (UMAPS) alumna, a TWAS-DFG Visiting Scientist Fellow, and a recipient of the AI4D Africa Scholarship. Dr. Okengwu has published widely, co-authored book chapters on AI ethics, and mentors young researchers in responsible and multilingual AI innovation.
Dr. Ugochi A. Okengwu is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, where she currently serves as Head of the Department. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Port Harcourt and has over two decades of experience spanning academia, research, and industry. Her research interests lie in Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, and Data Analysis, with a focus on applying AI for societal impact, particularly in agriculture, climate change, and health. Dr. Okengwu has held several administrative and academic leadership positions, including Postgraduate Coordinator and SIWES Coordinator, where she contributed to curriculum development, quality assurance, and student mentorship. She is a recipient of multiple international fellowships and awards, including the University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) Fellowship, TWAS-DFG Visiting Scientist Fellowship, and AI4D Africa Scholarship. She is an active member of several professional associations, including the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), and the Nigerian Computer Society. She has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, co-authored book chapters on AI ethics and applications, and continues to mentor young researchers in responsible AI and multilingual AI innovation.
